about

A Clean Kitchen Is A Happy Kitchen’s 2011 UK ‘Showersave’ tour in support of their first self titled album. The band shared stages with the likes of Poino, Silent Front, Nitkowski, West Country Bride, Malcoda, Bears Killing Bears, Gum Takes Tooth and played to literally 10’s of people in venues including The Victory, Dalston, Backline Studios, Guildford, Fighting Cocks, Kingston, Blue Cat Cafe, Stockport and Bar Santiago, Leeds.

The first show in Dalston was completely rammed but audience wise it was downhill from there. Guildford was a good show with Silent Front, tucked under a railway arch and as I remember The Fighting Cocks was a really strong performance where everything came together; perhaps the best night as I remember. The Leeds and Stockport gigs particularly stand out in my memory for some reason; Bar Santiago was on the edge of a small 70’s shopping centre. The support band’s singer was particularly drunk and unapologetically spilling blood and beer all over Craig’s pedal rack and things getting borderline physical. The poor logistical planning on my part involved zig zagging up and down the country and the drive to Stockport to play to less than 10 admittedly appreciative people (one of whom shared an allotment with ex The Fall keyboard player Julia Nagle) and back in the same night whilst the Sat Nav went bonkers in Milton Keynes at 4am and left us driving up and down the same stretch of road for hours. Eventually getting in at 6am I asked Craig if I could get him something and he dryly replied, ‘a tab of acid’.

This live recording was from their date at The Two Rivers, Staines on 5th June and was recorded by Lunch on a Tascam Pocket Track. I had completely forgotten that it existed but whilst looking for something else on an old hard drive I stumbled across it and was taken aback at how intense and strange it still sounded and spoke to the band about a small release and they agreed. Butsenzeller tarted the sound up a bit and I think the results speak for themselves. The album title comes from a sign on a post gig fast food establishment in Staines.

The Two Rivers pub at 43 Church Street, Staines was known as The Phoenix until 2010 and had the dubious honour of being one of Staines’ premier live music venues. It was demolished in Summer 2020.

“Holed up in some Belgian bunker, the trio must have been force-fed a staple diet of John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman for extended periods of time because the influence of those two jazz greats courses through the veins of The History Of Music: A Mosaic. Trout Mask Replica territory of squalling racket and untutored jazz. But just like Captain Beefheart’s masterpiece it does contain moments of fractured beauty when, and not for the first time, Ward’s guitar apes that of Robert Fripp.” – God Is In The TV

"A Shellac sounding groove fest that Steve Albini would definitely approve of." - Echoes and Dust

“Stone Roses jamming with the Throbbing Gristle” – Monolith Cocktail“

Deftly consolidating all the best elements of math, noise and post-rock into one convenient package.” – Hemulism

“Chaos, noise and madness” – The Rockologist

“Explosive and volatile, it could be heralded as one of the greatest of all time” – Moon and Back

“Irreverent bullshit” – Beardrock

“avant-garde maverick genii” – Green Man

“This skillful trio is blending random amounts of progressive, experimental, math, noise, in a very awkward but surprisingly interesting way” – Noizine

“Brilliant…a sprawling mass of post-rock and psychedelic experimentation with elements of free-form jazz” – Famous Last Words
